What is it?
We ask all new-comers to attend an orientation before they sit with us, regardless of previous experience with meditation or Zen. All people from all backgrounds are welcome. Orientation will cover instruction on meditation, breathing, posture, chanting, bowing and the form of the practice, as well as some background on Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Once you have attended the orientation you are welcome to attend any or all parts of our weekly schedule, as well as our zazenkai retreats (zazenkai retreats require registration in advance).
When and Where is it?
Most Sundays, 8:30am – 9:15am
Orientation starts promptly at 8:30 am, so please plan to arrive by 8:20 am. It will last for about 45 minutes. Once you have attended the Orientation you are welcome to stay for all, part, or none of the three meditation periods that follow from 9:30 to 11:00. Coffee and refreshments are served at 11:00.
Haku-un-ji Zen Center is located within a residential neighborhood of Tempe. Click here for our address and contact information. If possible please call or email us in advance so we know to expect you.
What to bring?
- Please wear dark clothes that are loose, comfortable and cover your legs and shoulders. Please avoid t-shirts with slogans or other writing.
- Wear shoes you can easily remove; you will not wear your shoes in the meditation hall (zendo), but it is fine to wear socks if you wish.
- Please leave your phones, drinks, bags and other personal belongings in your car if possible, as they cannot be taken into the meditation hall. There is a board where you can place your keys.
- While donations are welcome, no donation is required or expected from those coming to orientation for the first time.
